Specialised dementia care

In 2011, the UK’s first specialist dementia centre for seafarers opened at Western Acres, as an extension of Belvedere House, after staff identified that 40 per cent of residents at the time had some form of dementia.

The dementia care unit is centred on a single-storey annexe, providing 12 nursing bedrooms with en-suite facilities and three two-bedroomed apartments for up to 36 residents.

There is also a sheltered internal courtyard for residents, featuring a sensory landscape, which offers a safe space for residents to enjoy the outdoors in a calm and comfortable setting.

Our dedicated dementia facility gives us the flexibility to provide residents with a full range of accommodation and care services all on one site.

We have seen first-hand the positive impact early diagnosis and dementia therapies can have on our residents and we use techniques such as memory boxes, music sessions and one-to-one support as part of our care programme.

Coping with dementia can often be hard for friends and relatives so we run a monthly coffee morning where you can chat to our trained Dementia Champions or one another, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
