Belvedere House Care Home in Banstead

Welcome to Belvedere House, our beautiful nursing care home in Banstead, Surrey. Our home is operated by the Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society, a registered charity established in 1865 to provide care for aged, infirm, or disabled seafarers, their widows, and dependants.

Set in 14 acres of lush, greenbelt countryside, ours is a home that honours lives spent at sea. It’s a place for ex-seafarers and their dependants to relax, make friends, talk about old times and new, and enjoy a fulfilling life.

The home has a history stretching back over 150 years, taking in a number of relocations, before we moved to our beautiful Surrey care home in Banstead in 2001 and opened the current Belvedere House. In 2023, we finished bringing  the home fully up to date, turning it into the state-of-the-art nursing and care facility it is today.

Now, our Banstead care home boasts 68 bright, fully furnished bedrooms with ensuites, 20 sheltered flats (plus a lodge house), and a specialised dementia unit, all set within our landscaped grounds. After a life at sea, it’s a slice of paradise on land.

At Belvedere House we go out of our way to make sure residents are able to live life on their own terms. That means our focus is on is on dignity, independence and comfort. And to achieve that, we offer various types of care.

If you’re interested in knowing more, we’d love to show you around.

Nursing care

Residents are guaranteed to have help at hand, 24 hours per day. Our staffing levels far exceed the industry standard.

Residential care

Rather than having a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, we’ve designed our care services to suit every resident, whatever their needs.

And to make sure they’re always getting the best level of care, our Care Assistants are industry professionals with the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Care at Level 2 or Level 3, or are training towards it.

Respite care

Are you a regular carer that needs short-term respite care for your loved one? We’re able to offer high-quality temporary respite care at our Banstead care home.

Specialised dementia care

Ex-seafarers often live with dementia later in life, and because of that, we have a dedicated dementia care unit on site. The unit has been designed specifically to cater for those with dementia and is staffed by highly trained professionals.

Accommodation and facilities

At our Banstead nursing home, you’ll find comfort and care at every turn.

We’ve designed our private and communal areas to help our residents switch off, unwind, socialise and feel safe.

Peace-of-mind, comfort, security – we know that for ex-seafarers these are qualities that can’t be valued highly enough. And you’ll find all three in our 68 large, comfortable bedrooms, each with an ensuite wet room. For couples wishing to stay together, we offer five sets of interconnecting rooms.

Our communal areas are designed for residents to meet one another, share stories, eat well, and take part in activities. There are four lounges, one activity room, and three dining rooms that are perfect for this.

And outside, the 14 acres of beautiful grounds invite residents to explore the gardens, sit awhile, and take in the sights and sounds of nature.

The home also has areas dedicated for staff, such as staff rooms, locker rooms, offices, and toilets.

Meals and catering

We love mealtimes at Belvedere House! They’re a chance for residents to enjoy our carefully designed menu either in the company of others or in the comfort of their own rooms.

We serve three full meals every day from a menu that follows a four-week rotating cycle. Our menu changes four times a year to give residents variety and to ensure seasonal freshness, with new menus designed with the help of our residents. We also cater to special and therapeutic diets as advised by specialists and outlined in each resident’s care plan.

We also love to celebrate events such as Chinese New Year, Trafalgar Day and National Chocolate Day with special menus.

And rest assured, if residents are hungry or thirsty outside mealtimes, snacks and hot and cold drinks are always available.

Staying active

For a vibrant social life among fellow ex-seafarers and their families, our care home in Surrey is the ideal place. We offer activities like coffee mornings, keep-fit sessions, parties, outings, performances, and events involving volunteers from the local community.

As a resident, you’ll be able to use our craft room, library, sensory-stimulation equipment, the internet, a bar, outdoor seating areas, and wheelchair-accessible routes throughout the grounds.

We want our residents to be able to live an active and fulfilling life at Belvedere House, and we’ll respect their rights to take calculated risks in pursuit of this.

Our values

At Belvedere House we have an open, positive, and inclusive atmosphere, where residents’ needs and preferences are at the forefront of all our decisions and operations.

Our team

Our staff are second to none. They’re what makes Belvedere House the caring, supportive place it is: home to a community of ex-seafarer residents each receiving personalised care and attention.

We encourage all of our teams – everyone from housekeeping, catering, administration and estates to health and well-being, bar, welfare, training, and accounts – to work together to ensure a comfortable, well-maintained environment.

And for this we recruit only the best, with thorough background checks, including references and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearances, for all staff and volunteers. We’re committed to professional development to make sure we’re always offering the highest standards of care.

Admissions process

Our admissions process is designed to make the transition as smooth and personalised as possible for each of our new residents.

We ask residents to take a needs assessment with our trained staff before admission – in line with government regulations – so we know how we can best meet their specific needs.

And in cases of emergency admissions, we gather key information within 48 hours, then carry out a full assessment within five days of admission to make sure we’re able to offer continuous care.
